"Walrus Man. Transforming Shaman"
With this bronze I wanted to capture in real form an Inupiat Shaman's spirit within the body of a walrus. The Shaman would use the animal's body for traveling in the animal world. Shamans are very important to the Inupiat. They ensured health, good hunting and good fortune for the people. In walrus form, he would travel to where the animals live.
The walrus is one of the main staples in the Inupiat diet. It also provided hide for the umiak or skin boat, implements and tools. The ivory tusks were prized for its beauty and usability. Fetishes were carved from the tusks for luck and ceremony.
